The requirment to protect workers from the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling in the workplace is a legal requirement. Providing employees with manual handling training, followed by regulator refresher training (or tool box talks) is one step towards meeting that requirement.

The HSE describes manual handling as “transporting or supporting a load by hand or bodily force. It includes lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving loads. A load can be an object, person or animal“.

Level 2 Award in Principles of Manual Handling (RQF)

The Level 2 Award in Principles of Manual Handling qualification outlines the reasons for safer manual handling and the legal requirements. Learners will develop an understanding of how risk assessments can improve safety, the theory of safe movement principles and how to reduce the risk of harm. It is suitable for all employees to raise their awareness of the risks of unsafe manual handling practices and for people who might have to carry out manual handling as part of their job, e.g. handling deliveries, parcels and boxes.
