HSE & Work Place Courses
All the qualifications listed below are suitable for use in the Work Place. Some are also recognised and / or recommended by the Health & Safety Executive.
Unfortunately, to get an idea of what kind of qualifications are required for your work environment you will have to complete a risk assessment. Factors such as whether your work environment is considered high or low risk and how many employees you have will influence your decision between a Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work and a Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work.
However, we would always recommend the full three day Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work over the one day Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work. The three day courses includes a lot more content on illness in the workplace (as well as additional content on injuries). Where as traditionally a first aider might be called upon to deal with injuries, these now account for less than half of all work injuries. Most reportable occurrences now entail illness (such as diabetes & asthma) rather than injury. All topics that are only covered on the three day Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work qualification.
Also included here are requalification courses and refresher courses. In order to keep any three day First Aid at Work certificate valid, a first aider must complete a two day Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work Requalification course before it expires (First Aid at Work certificates last 3 Years). There is no requalification course for the Emergency First Aid at Work certification, it is simply repeated within the 3 year validity period.
The HSE also strongly recommends that all First Aiders complete a 1/2 day First Aid Annual Refresher to ensure their skills are up to date and they are fully versed in any guideline changes.
Depending on your working environment, you may need consider other courses such as Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator and Level 3 Award in Administering Emergency Oxygen .
